Bridget Badger's Buddy Badges

Larry the Letter Carrier jumped into Ireland the other day and I began telling him about my Badger Buddy Badges, and he was like, whoa mate – put it in a letter so I can share with my online friends.

Hello! My name is Bridget Badger. I live in the hedgerows of Ireland. I recently joined Badger Buddies. All baby badgers dream of one day being Badger Buddies, it is a great way to make friends and a way to learn important lessons. We earn Badger Buddy Badges when we complete lessons.

The Badger Buddy Badges begin with the Irish Oak tree. The trunk badge is for Grow and Learn – which we do every day because there is so much to know! The tree is built with four acorn badges. More badges can be earned for other activities and chores! Badger Buddies wear their badges with pride!

The Excavate and Habitat Badge is earned when we learn to dig with our claws and move dirt so we can create burrows for our homes. We have strong claws and dig faster than two humans with shovels! When I first started digging, I was afraid I would get dirt in my eyes but to my surprise I have a set of clear eyelids. I can close my eyes and still see! When the dirt flies even if I try, I can’t get dirt in my eyes. I can be completely underground in less than five minutes!

The Sett and Connect Badge is earned when we learn how badgers live in burrows underground. Once we earn the Excavate and Habitat Badge, we are on our way to earn the Sett and Connect Badge. We call our underground homes setts. Badgers use tunnels to connect to other setts. This allows us to live close to friends and family.

The Clan Fan Badge is earned when we learn how to help our fellow badger. Helping a fellow badger is easy and fun! One way we help other Badger Buddies is with the scent glands in our paws. These scent glands help mark the path to food and the way back home, so no Badger Buddy is hungry or left alone. We can also use the scent glands to mark a tree that is good for scratching and climbing!

The Night Light Badge is earned when we learn how to use our night vision. Badgers mostly live underground, so we have no light to see! We are nocturnal, so when we come out of our setts it is usually nighttime. Unlike most nocturnal animals who have big eyes, we have very small eyes and don’t see that well at night. But they are special eyes and can reflect light so we can use them like flashlights to see in the dark.

Your friend,

Bridget Badger

Do you remember? How do you earn the first Badger Buddy Badge? What shape are the Badger Buddy Badges? What is Bridget Badger's home called?

Additional tidbits – Badgers don’t only live underground, they can live in caves and rocky cutouts. Badgers will sometimes move into an existing sett that has been left behind by another clan. They are clean animals and when building their home, they will make a separate burrow to use for their bathroom! They also change their bedding to help keep the sett clean.
