Brin the Blanket

Larry the Letter Carrier jumped into the Congo of Africa the other day and I began telling him about Brin the Blanket, and he was like, whoa mate – put it in a letter so I can share with my online friends.

This is the story about Brin the Blanket and her journey. Brin the Blanket is caring, warm and nurturing. Brin the Blanket can wrap around you like a warm hug and comfort you, wipe your tears when you are sad, wrap around and hold you when you’re cold and feeling lonely. Brin the Blanket provides love and support to all who needs it. Over time Brin the Blanket has wrapped around so many in need. Friends, family, and strangers in troubled times can count on Brin the Blanket.

Let's begin the journey of Brin the Blanket. Conway the orangutan was feeling scared one day and his friend Vicky, who was moving very very far away thought Conway could use Brin the Blanket more than her. As Vicky covered Conway with Brin the Blanket, he felt a little squeeze as if saying there, there it will be OK. Conway loved and cherished Brin the Blanket and then one day his friend Boy Congo the gorilla was feeling really sad, so Conway the orangutan wrapped Brin the Blanket around Boy Congo. Brin the Blanket tightly squeezed Boy Congo as if to say there, there it will be OK. Boy Congo felt Brin the Blanket’s soft and gentle touch and felt much better. He thanked Conway for giving him Brin the Blanket. Conway told Boy Congo that Brin the Blanket was not really his to give - somehow Brin the Blanket knows when someone is in need - and that is where she goes.  Boy Congo had to promise when the day came that Brin the Blanket needed to go away, he would let her go.  Conway told Boy Congo it would not be easy - but Brin the Blanket has a job to do.

Boy Congo was so thankful for Brin the Blanket. He felt so much better with Brin over his shoulder. He never left home without Brin the Blanket. Boy Congo came across many friends and family as well as strangers - he wondered would Brin the Blanket feel the need to go to one of them. But Brin the Blanket never left his side. Boy Congo took Brin the Blanket on all his travels, swinging through trees, exploring the jungle, he was never without Brin. Brin the Blanket was Boy Congo's best friend.

As time passed, Boy Congo noticed Brin the Blanket getting thin and fraying.  She still wrapped herself around him, but her hold was weaker. One day, he told Brin the Blanket she didn’t have to comfort him. He would comfort her. He held her tight. And gently moved her from here to there, showing extreme care. Outside he would hold her up to feel the warmth of the sun. Boy Congo saw more and more holes where the sun shined through. Boy Congo worried about Brin the Blanket, but Brin wearily draped herself over Boy Congo's shoulders as if to say there, there it will be OK.  Boy Congo gently touched Brin the Blanket and thanked her for her love and care and said he would love her forever.

The next day on their walk a gentle wind blew Brin the Blanket off Boy Congo's shoulder - he watched Brin the Blanket lift higher and higher into the sky until it disappeared beyond the clouds. Boy Congo cried. But he remembered his promise to Conway. He had to let Brin the Blanket go. She had a job to do.

Sometime later, Boy Congo saw a little orangutan with a blanket wrapped over his shoulders - he knew right away it was Brin the Blanket.  The blanket was lavender covered with dragonflies and calla lilies. As Boy Congo walked past the little orangutan the corner of the blanket gently touched Boy Congo, as if to say there, there you are OK. Boy Congo touched his shoulder and smiled. He knew no matter where Brin the Blanket blew, a part of her would always be with him.

Sincerely,

Brin the Blanket’s sister

I love and miss her very much.

Do you remember? What part of Africa did Larry the Letter Carrier jumped to? Who gave Boy Congo Brin the Blanket? What color was Brin the Blanket?

Additional tidbits – Orangutans are sensitive animals and don't like loud noises or stress, they really do like to have blankets to hide under. Gorillas are intelligent animals. Some have been taught sign language. Gorillas have been observed making and using tools, such as ladders. A gorilla's noseprint is unique like a person's fingerprint! Blankets tend to offer security and can provide the feeling of safety and comfort.
