Kristel Quetzal and the Fantastic Feather Ball

Larry the Letter Carrier jumped into Guatemala the other day and I began telling him about the Fantastic Feather Gala, and he was like, whoa mate – put it in a letter so I can share with my online friends.

Hello! My name is Kristel Quetzal. I am a resplendent quetzal. Let me tell you about the Fantastic Feather Gala that takes place in Guatemala.

It is true what they say, birds of a feather stick together. The ball is attended by a variety of quetzals. Gold, red, blue, and green, the most amazing feather colors you have ever seen!

This Gala never gets old. Bonnie flies in wearing red feathers, with a white feather draped neckline and blue and black wings lined in white and looking so fine, with just a bold hint of gold.

Flying in from the deck is Bob, black feathers line his neck. He boasts red feathers along with a golden tail. Bonnie gives a yell! Bob’s grey beak gives a hello squeak.

Not sure why, Jack is acting a little shy. He sports golden feathers on his back, blue wings are his thing!

The crested quetzal is a fun one! Look at those fluffy head feathers glittering blue and green and standing so tall.

Betsy, please! Why are you sitting in the tree? Look at you, your feathers red, green, and blue! Your tail feathers hanging so long. You should be tweeting a song!

What a night at the Fantastic Feather Gala in Guatemala!  What a ball had by all the quetzals! It is time to say good night! Watch the fantastic feathers in flight!

Your friend,

Kristel Quetzal

Do you remember? What type of quetzal is Kristel? Where does the Fantastic Feather Gala take place? Who was acting shy?

Additional tidbits – The Resplendent Quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala and appears on the flag. The quetzal is also on the coat of arms and postage stamps. The Guatemalan Quetzal is the currency.  Aztec and Mayan cultures considered the quetzal tail feathers as a symbol of wealth. It takes 3 years for the quetzal to grow their tail feathers. Quetzal are secondary cavity nesters, meaning they like to live in holes in trees, but they don’t make the holes themselves. They will move into a nest carved out by a woodpecker!
