Leaving Greenland, Larry the Letter Carrier jumped down and across the Atlantic Ocean, hopped over the Gulf of Mexico and landed in the Eastern Pacific off the coast of Ecuador on the Galapagos Islands, where I met him and began telling Larry the Letter Carrier about my blue feet, and he was like, whoa mate – put it in a letter so I can share with my online friends.
Hello! My name is Maya. I want to tell you about me and my friends and our colorful feet and beaks! I am a blue-footed booby and I like to sing booby do da dooby while I tap my blue feet to the beat. The sound is oh so sweet!
My friend Ruby is a red-footed booby, and she likes to sing Ruby booby boo. With her blue bill she trumpets and honks, buuuuup buuuuup buuuuup bonk bonk, wings out, flap flap flap it!
My friend Pedro likes to sing, “vooby vooby scooby I am a Peruvian booby.” He rocks the most with his squawk squawking voice. His grey feet tap tap tapping all day.
My friend Mar is a Nazca booby who sings na na na booby bobby baa baa baa. Her yellow eyes looking to the sky, her grey feet never miss a beat.
My friend James Booby Brown is a brown booby that flies uptown and down. Wing fling zigga zigga zing. His blue beak honks a mean streak while his yellow feet tap a mellow beat.
My friend Ringo is a greater flamingo. Bray bray what he say, badda badda bingo. Ringo go go go dance the flamenco!
My friend Frida is a frigatebird, and she makes the craziest sounds you have ever heard. Clack clack flap her wings back. Hum drum, drum drum drumming, rattling rattling rat a tat tattling.
When we all get together, we have a real fun time. Up and down the coast we are the birds that are loved the most. When we start booby do da doobying, bonk, bonk bonking, na na na booby bobby baa baa baaing, zigga zigga zinging, braying badda badda bingo and Ringo starts doing the flamenco with Frida clack clack clacking we are a sight to see and hear from Santa Cruz to Santiago to Isla Isabela. Wella wella wella batta batta bingo here we go!

Your friend,
Maya Blue-footed Booby
Do you remember? Did you read Larry the Letter Carrier’s last letter, Payer Polar Bear? It has been a few months since the story was posted. Why so long between letters? Crossing the Labrador Sea from Greenland to Newfoundland and then hopping down the east coast of the United States then jumping to Galapagos Island is over 6,400 miles! In addition to hopping, Larry the Letter Carrier also traveled by trains, planes, and cars!!
Additional tidbits – Booby birds are marine birds and are great divers. The blue-footed booby’s feet getter their color from the fish and squid they eat, and they get darker as the get older. The red-footed booby is the smallest of the booby bird family. Booby birds have a comb-like toenail on their middle toe so they can spread waterproof oil from their tail through their feathers. Greater flamingos are the largest of the flamingos standing 5 feet tall and weighing 8 pounds, their legs are usually longer than their body. Frigatebirds fly most of the day over water, but do not land on the water even though they have webbed feet. This is because they do not have waterproof feathers like booby birds. The Galapagos Islands are 97% National Forest. It has over 400 species of fish and the most unique birds in the world. The wildlife on the islands has little fear of humans. The island maintains 12 hours of daytime and nighttime every day.
