Larry the Letter Carrier leaped into Kazakhstan the other day and I began telling him about the UFO, and he was like, whoa mate – put it in a letter so I can share with my online friends.
Hello! My name is Omar Saiga. I am a saiga antelope and I live in Kazakhstan. I am an interesting looking animal, my nose being my greatest feature! I live in a place that gets really hot and dusty in the summer and pretty cold in the winter. My nose comes in handy. It can filter the dust in the summer, so breathing is easy. In the winter, my nose heats the air and helps keep me warm! It also helps me make loud sounds. Now that you know a little bit about me, let me share my adventure.
I have two really good friends, Aisha Pika and Alan Lynx. They spent a lot of time by the Caspian Sea, so I believed them when they told me about a sea monster, they saw one day. They said it was really big, with big eyes and was black and green and swam really fast. But it turns out that the story was just for fun. They never saw a sea monster. I felt silly for believing them. Then I thought about my own sighting I could share. I told them I had seen a UFO the other night. It was hovering high in the sky and then I thought it landed near the Caspian Sea. I suggested camping out to see if we could find the aliens! Aisha and Alan thought that was a great idea. We gathered our camping gear – tents, sleeping bags, flashlights, and a camera just in case we found the aliens. We were just about to head out when I told them I couldn’t go! But I told them they should go and see if they could find the UFO and aliens. I laughed to myself, knowing I had a surprise planned for them!
Aisha Pika and Alan Lynx headed to the campsite by the Caspian Sea. I headed home to find some green paint. While Aisha and Alan were sitting up the tent and preparing the camp site, I was spray painting my fur green so I would look like an alien. I quietly made my way to the camp site. I hid behind some tall grasses. I watched Aisha and Alan as they were looking here and there trying to find an alien. I stayed hidden until the two of them began getting tired. They decided to sleep outside the tent so they could keep an eye out for the alien. I heard them talking, and saying they wished I was there for this adventure. I giggled. As they started to drift off to sleep, I walked closer to them and made a loud sound.
They jumped up with surprise at the sight of me. Aisha’s mouth opened and her ears were pinned back. She let out a little squeaky yell and ran inside the tent. Alan just started laughing. He was laughing so hard he showed all his teeth. He fell to the ground and rolled back and forth, snarling, and laughing. Aisha Pika peeked out of the tent wondering why Alan found the alien so funny. Then she took a good look at me and realized I wasn’t an alien at all, just Omar Saiga painted green. Then we all started laughing. Nothing is better than having fun with your friends!

Your friend,
Omar Saiga
Do you remember? What is Omar Saiga’s greatest feature? How does his nose help him in the summer? How does his nose help him in the winter?
Additional tidbits – Saigas can live in large herds of 1000. They are herbivores and will travel 72 miles a day looking for food. Saigas are fast runners, reaching speeds of 50 miles per hour! The Caspian Sea is actually a lake. It is the largest lake in the world, covering 143,000 square miles and stretches across 5 countries! It is 4 ½ times larger than Lake Superior, the 2nd largest lake in the world covering 31,700 square miles.
