Payer Polar Bear

Larry the Letter Carrier jumped into Greenland the other day and I began telling him about the Iceberg Fair and he was like, whoa mate – put it in a letter so I can share with my online friends.

Hello! My name is Payer Polar Bear and I want to tell you about the Iceberg Fair. We had so much fun in the midnight sun! The days are long and oh so bright and the icebergs are shiny, icy and white.

When the Iceberg Fair comes to town, so do lots of polar bears from all around!

The Iceberg Fair takes place in July, when the sun never leaves the sky.

The Iceberg Fair has rides and slides, good eats and sweets.

The best time to go is when the sun hangs low and the ice shines in a pretty orange glow.

My favorite ride is the Slip and Slide. Bear paws are like grippers on ice, so to ride the Slip and Slide every bear must wear special sliding slippers on their feet to slip and slide across the ice sheets.

Once you start to slip and slide across the top, you can’t stop. There are bumper pads on every side but one. That one side is the start of the Run for Fun Slide.

Whoosh swoosh. Swish whish. Zip zip yippee! In a surge you are down the side of the iceberg! If you land on your feet, you get a treat! Land on your bottom, you did awesome! Land on your head, it’s home to bed!! Not really, but you might get a bump that turns red.

I also enjoyed the Iceberg Fair Fjord Ride. You slip off the curb of an iceberg and onto a surfboard to surf the fjord. When the wind starts to blow, you really start to go. As you soar toward the end of the inlet, you can see the bright midnight sun. It is a sight you won’t forget. Off the board you jump, your ride is done.

Remember, writing is right on! So, write a comment below.

Your friend,

Payer Polar Bear

Do you remember? What month does the Iceberg Fair take place? What is the name of Payer’s favorite ride? What did polar bears wear on their feet to ride the Slip and Slide Ride?

Additional tidbits – Because the northern part of Greenland is in the Arctic Circle, they experience 24 hours of daylight – known as the Midnight Sun, this occurs from end of May through July. The color of the sky can range in colors from pink, purple, yellow, and red – and glow orange on the horizon. 90% of an iceberg is under the water. Greenland’s ice sheets are the largest chunks of ice north of the equator. Icebergs are like snowflakes, no two are alike. The tallest iceberg can be over 150 feet high! In Greenland there are no roads connecting towns and more people own boats instead of cars for transportation. Did you know that polar bear hair is not white but transparent and their skin is black? The polar bear’s paw is the size of a dinner plate!
