Larry the Letter Carrier jumped into Indonesia the other day and I began telling him about singing solo, and he was like, whoa mate – put it in a letter so I can share with my online friends.
Hello! My name is Tammy Tarsier. I am one of the smallest primates in Indonesia. But I have the biggest eyes in the world, relevant to my body size! My eyes are bigger than my brain, I know that sounds insane!
When the sun goes down, tarsiers like to jump around. We have a special way to greet the light of day. Tarsiers grab a friend and sing duets, high pitched sounds nobody forgets. Before the sun is high and bright and the night is all done, tarsiers give a little cheer, cling to a tree, cover with a leaf and fall asleep.
Last night as we were climbing and clinging to trees, we thought about singing. Some primates are really great singing in duets and quartets. Few sing solo, but it is what I want to do. I made up my own song, but I thought it sounded all wrong.
I want to be the one, standing in the sun. But I am afraid, so I stay in the shade.
I didn’t want anyone to see me, so I hid in the tree singing to myself and nobody else. But then a friend heard my supersonic song and asked to sing along. As the sun started to rise, my friend shouted “I have a surprise!” All the big eyes of the tarsiers were looking at me. Do I sing? Do I dare? My friend stood behind me. She began to dance; I knew I had to take a chance. I sang my supersonic song and others began to sing along.
I want to be the one, standing in the sun. But I am afraid, so I stay in the shade.
The sun is too bright for me to see, so I sleep the day way and wait for the night so I can play.
So, I can play. So, we can play, my friends and I when the sun is not high in the sky.
The sun brought a new day, and it is fair to say the tarsiers sang the night way. I gave a little cheer, climbed on a branch and was happy I took a chance to sing my supersonic song. Everyone was still quietly singing along!

Your friend,

Do you remember? Where did Tammy Tarsier live? Are her eyes little or big? What was Tammy Tarsier afraid to do?
Additional tidbits – Tarsiers are small but mighty, they can jump 40 times their body length which averages about 5 inches (not including the tail) which means they jump about 16 feet! The big eyes of the tarsier do not rotate, instead they move their head 180 degrees like an owl. Their tails are almost twice the length of their body. They also have very long legs and fingers. They do sing in duets at sunrise and then go to sleep until nighttime. Humans can not hear the supersonic sound of the tarsier! The highest sound a human can hear is about 20 kilohertz, the tarsier makes chirps and whistles at 91 kilohertz!
